Our School Books

Books Written for Gawber – Loved Far Beyond Our School

Our school is proud to share a growing collection of children’s books written especially for Gawber Primary School. Each story began its life in our classrooms, inspired by our pupils, our community and our curriculum. Today, these books are enjoyed not only by Gawber children but by readers across Barnsley and beyond.

Galberg

Galberg is a Barnsley‑rooted time‑travel adventure in which two children race into the past to save a rare piece of blue glass—the beating heart of their community. Inspired by real local history and crafted to support Key Stage 2 learning, Galberg is now our Year 4 novel study and a much‑loved text across school. It celebrates community, heritage and the power of courage, making it a favourite for readers who enjoy mystery, adventure and local storytelling.

The Crochet Club and the Magic Stitch

This story began with a simple question from our crochet‑mad pupils: “Can we have a book about crochet?” A few secret chapters were slipped into classrooms… and the reaction was extraordinary. Children queued at the author’s door each day asking for the next instalment. Their excitement inspired the completion of the full novel, now treasured by our school community and enjoyed more widely online. It is a joyful celebration of creativity, friendship and the magic of making.

The Jeffrika Picture‑Book Series

Jeffrika, our beloved school mascot, stars in a duo of picture books written for Key Stage 1 readers.

  • In one story, Jeffrika travels back in time to explore how schools have changed through the decades.

  • In the other, he embarks on a playful, story‑led adventure that gently introduces children to Spanish.

Originally written to complement our History and Languages curriculum, both books have grown far beyond their initial purpose and are now enjoyed by families and schools outside Gawber.
