At Gawber Primary School we recognise that oracy—the ability to speak and listen effectively—is a fundamental skill that significantly impacts academic success and future life opportunities. Our approach is designed to embed oracy throughout the curriculum, ensuring that all children become confident, articulate and respectful communicators. We set out a clear progression of oracy knowledge across year groups, providing structured opportunities for children to develop their speaking and listening abilities in every subject.
Our oracy framework is built around three key pillars: Talk in the Early Years, Talk for Life and Talk for Learning. Each pillar serves as a foundation for developing children’ communication skills in different contexts, supporting both academic success and personal development.
Vocabulary
At Gawber, a well-planned, structured approach is in place for identifying and mapping key vocabulary across the curriculum. This clear, progressive approach to vocabulary selection ensures pupils have the linguistic foundation needed to engage in high-quality discussion, articulate ideas with precision and access the full breadth of the curriculum. Each subject area has mapped out the key vocabulary that children will learn during their time at Gawber.
Performance Opportunities
At Gawber, we aim to provide our children with opportunities for performing to increasing audiences. From delivering persuasive speeches to a room full of Barnsley headteachers, to performing poetry to peers, parents and carers, we aim to provide all children with different opportunities where they can make their voices heard!
