Lucky Pennies

Welcome to Class 5!

We are…

The Lucky Pennies!

Welcome to Class 5. Here are a few things that you will need to know…

The year 5 team

You will have two teachers this year.

  • Mrs Maul will be in school all week but will teach you all day on Monday and Tuesday.

  • Mrs Haisman will teach you Wednesday morning and all day Thursday and Friday.

  • Mrs Birkbeck will also be working with you throughout the week in the mornings.

PE

PE will be every Wednesday afternoon (first thing) and every Friday afternoon (last thing).  You will need to come to school in your PE kit.

Spellings

Spellings will be sent home every Friday for you to learn. Mrs Haisman will test you on these spellings each week. Throughout the week you will learn the spelling rule that accompanies the list of spellings you have taken home. On Friday, you will also be tested on the ‘mystery spelling.’ This is a spelling that you will not have taken home but will test your knowledge of how to apply the rule.

Reading

Children in Year 5 are expected to read a few pages of their reading book at home every evening. They can read to themselves or aloud to an adult but this must be recorded in their reading record and signed by an adult. These will be checked every week.

Please bring your reading record into school every Friday.

Homework

Mrs Haisman will set homework every Friday. You will take this home in a book. Please return the book to school by Wednesday.

Homework Club

Homework Club will run each Thursday lunchtime for children who have not been able to complete their homework at home. Children will be asked to complete their homework during Homework Club.

The Lucky Penny Jar

Filling the jar with all of the golden pennies means that you are owed a ‘Lucky Penny Day.’ This is an exciting treat day that rewards you for all of your hard work. The main way to earn the pennies is to complete your homework on time as each time you do, a penny will be added to the jar.  You can also earn pennies for other reasons such as working hard, being outstanding in some way or making your teachers proud.

Bikeability –  October

Active Barnsley will deliver Bikeability Level 1 and Level 2 cycle training. This course is for children who can already ride a bike securely. Children should try to practise beforehand, especially signalling whilst also being observant of all surroundings throughout.

Bikeability is split into levels 1 and 2. Level 1 will include a two-hour session of skill exercises held on the playground. Active Barnsley can provide a bike and helmet if you do not have these.

If Active Barnsley feel you are have passed at level 1, you will then progress onto level 2 which will be held out on local roads.
