Year 5 - The Black Panthers

Adults

This year, Miss Burgin will be the main class teacher.
Mrs Cooke will also work in our classroom.

PE

PE will be Monday and Wednesday.
Children can come to school in their PE kits and stay in them for the whole day.

Bikeability

Our Bikeability sessions will be held w.c. 21st September.
I will get some more information out to you ASAP.

Homework

Every Friday, you will be set homework. This will be maths based with the occasional research project. Homework should be returned by the following Thursday in order to receive class points.

Children in Year 5 are still expected to practise their times tables regularly so that they retain all of their learning from class 4. As part of your homework, you should complete at least 10 minutes of TT Rockstars every week. This will be checked every Thursday morning and extra points will be given out to children who play regularly.

At Gawber, we love to read a range of texts.
You should read a couple of pages most evenings either independently or to an adult. This should be recorded in your reading record and signed by an adult.

Reading records must be brought in daily as they will also be used in school.
Once children have finished reading a book, they can complete an online book review (in school or at home).

Spellings

You will receive spellings every Friday inside your homework book. On the following Friday, you will be tested on these spellings. Any incorrect spellings will be highlighted in your homework books.
Every spelling test will include 2 known stinkers (taken from the year 5/6 statutory spellings).
There will also be a mystery spelling word to check your understanding of the spelling rule.

Spelling Bee

In order to help you to learn the statutory spelling words for Year 5 and 6, we will complete half termly Spelling Bees.
At the start of each half term, you will complete a ‘cold test’ where you will be tested on the unknown words.
Your results will be sent home with any incorrect spellings highlighted. You will then have the opportunity to complete this Spelling Bee again at the start of the following half term after having the chance to practise these words.

Keeping in touch

If you need to contact us, please phone school or speak to us before or after school.
We will post a range of pictures and posts on Class Dojo.

Polite request

If possible, would you please select your child’s lunch using the online system as it saves a lot of time during registration.

How you can support at home

Please continue to work with your child on their previously learnt skills so that we can build upon these in school.
If you require any help or additional resources, please just ask.
