Learning Latin

As Gawber Primary School begins its journey to the teaching of Latin as a foreign language, children in upper KS2 will have the same starting point on the programme of study but will likely progress at slightly different rates. Yearly reviews will take place to ensure the teaching of each chapter is sufficient for each year group. Latin is introduced in Year 5 alongside a historical focus on Romans so that children are able to create links between areas of learning.

Links between knowledge of Latin and the vocabulary explored in English sessions are made to help strengthen and deepen the knowledge children have around language comprehension, allowing them to further understand less familiar vocabulary across the curriculum.

The teaching of Latin will be based on the lives of a real family at the Roman fort of Vindolanda to make learning meaningful for our children. The teaching of KS2 Latin will occur once weekly timetabled sessions of 30 minutes or an hour’s session every two weeks. This will ensure that over the course of a half term, one unit of Latin will be taught.

Each unit of work will be planned to build on prior learning and provide a foundation for the next unit. Prior learning will be reviewed each session to consolidate knowledge and commit learning to the children’s long-term memory.

Sessions have an oracy-based approach, where children will have opportunities to orally rehearse the language using the school’s agreed strategies. Children will use flashcards to help revisit knowledge regularly, thus allowing them to continually embed learning.
